About Toto

Toto was founded in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also famous studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The group took their name from a Latin word that means "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore all styles of music.


Toto's third release, Turn Back, was not a success in 1981. However they made amends with their fourth release, Isolation, which contained two hit songs with the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour made Toto a household name across the world.

After a hiatus of a couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. It's a change from the ballads of previous albums and includes some heavy rock. The album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.

During the recording process of the fifth album The group loses its manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to record a new album and change their name with an entirely different producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, is now replacing Fergie Frederiksen as lead vocalist. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.

In 1999, the band release Mindfields and begins an extensive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. It also features a cover of Weezer's hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring group includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest along with keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

The first album of the totos was the self-titled Toto, released in 1978. The album was a huge hit and launched the band into international fame. Since then, the band has released 14 albums that have all been huge hits.

In 1984, Toto wrote their first and to date only, movie score for the film Dune. It was a huge undertaking, and the entire group was required to participate. Kingdom of Desire was another success album. After a world tour drummer Bobby Kimball left the band and was replaced by drummer Fergie Frederiksen of Le Roux. The band continued their journey with their fifth studio album, Isolation. The album contained a variety of songs that were hits, like "Stranger in Town".

After Isolation, Toto took a break from the spotlight and went on hiatus. The band members of the group the opportunity to pursue their own projects. In 1996, the band came back together to tour and record an album. This was the first time all original members were on stage together for more than 10 years.

However, the group resumed performing in 2012 following the release of their album 40 Trips Around the Sun.

The album was a return form for the band and the tour supported it with sold-out shows across North America and Europe. Toto's reunion was helped by the inclusion of guitarist Steve Lukather and bassist Shem von Schroeck, who both rejoined the band.
